Last Saturday the Dragon Series came to Shotwick. Your own special correspondent Claire was there to tell the story. Many thanks to all the club members who volunteered to support the event and make it possible. Especially the very busy safety boats!
Dragon Racing
The sun shone and the wind blew for the Dragon racing event on Saturday 14th June, as sixteen young sailors enthusiastically took to the water.
The lively winds meant that the three safety boats were kept busy from the start, with several boats practising their capsizes or having some unscheduled visits to the shore.
Nevertheless, eight Teras set out in race 1, with another seven boats (4 Toppers, 2 Lasers and a Topaz Xenon) heading off around the course a few minutes later.
One safety boat appeared to be powered by a small duck rather than an actual engine, and we contemplated deploying a Tera to rescue it. However, after a brief spell on shore, the small duck was told to buck up and put some effort in, and we were soon back to full strength safety boat numbers.
In race 2, the field reduced to 11 boats with some cold sailors retiring after a capsize. Tom was first to cross the finish line in his Laser radial, followed by Sophie and Torie slaying the fashion vibes in matching bright orange caps and an orange tutu! Ieuan led the Tera fleet and was first to complete two laps of the sausage-triangle course.
A delicious pasta lunch was served at the clubhouse to fuel everyone for the afternoons racing.
The course was shortened to a triangle for races 3 and 4, and with winds increasing, the fleet decreased to 8 boats.
There was a brief moment at the start of race 4 when all the rescue boats had no rescuing to do. Having enjoyed their 20 second break, the fleet set off for race 4 and the safety boats were back in action. Yet again, Ieuan led the Teras whilst Tom led the second fleet.
